Wayve's Dirk Gorissen Speaks on AI and Safer Roads at Reuters Automotive Europe

Dirk Gorissen, Product Lead at Wayve, participated in a panel discussion at Reuters Automotive Europe titled “The Potential to Deliver Safer Roads.” Joined by industry veterans Sebastian Lasek from Volkswagen AG, Regis Robert from Group Lotus, and moderated by Borbala Nagy of Verdin Advisory, Dirk shared insights on how AI can address the persistent challenges facing autonomous vehicles (AVs) and the role of regulation in enhancing safety.

Dirk emphasized the critical role of end-to-end AI in tackling the “long-tail” of self-driving challenges—those rare but significant edge-case scenarios that autonomous vehicles must be trained to handle. He argued that only through end-to-end AI can we develop systems that anticipate and manage these scenarios more effectively than human drivers, thereby making AVs safer.

The conversation also touched on the importance of regulation in supporting safety, with Dirk explaining that regulation is not just about ensuring safety but about setting the guardrails for manufacturers to develop and deploy their technology responsibly. He highlighted the importance of evidence-based regulation in providing a framework that manufacturers and regulators can use to assure the public of the safety of autonomous vehicles.

Dirk also pointed to Wayve’s partnership with WMG at the University of Warwick and the UK Government on the DriveSafeAI project. He expressed that demonstrating the safety of AI systems is essential for building public trust, which is crucial for the widespread deployment and commercial success of self-driving vehicles in the global market.
